Barney Silverstone – RCM

Organ Recital

Wednesday 9 April 2025 – 1 pm to 1:45 pmrecitals

We last saw Barney Silverstone (Royal College of Music) at the Cathedral in May 2024when we greatly enjoyed an excellent programme of music.

And on Wednesday 9 April 2025  we were very happy to welcome him again to the Cathedral for a lunchtime Organ Recital.

We were regaled with a wonderfully varied selection of pieces from the modern ( David Bednall) to the late baroque (J.S. Bach),  including an excellent rendering of  that old Irish Air, Danny Boy , rewritten by C.V. Stanford.

The recital climaxed with the monumental Introduction and PassacagliabyMax Reger, which felt almost as if it could have been written as incidental music for the launch of a rocket to the Moon!

Recordings of the recital are available on this webpage. See below.

Programme

David Bednall (b. 1979) Toccata on ‘Aberystwyth’

recitalsBiography

Barney Silverstone is a third-year undergraduate studying at the Royal College of Music, where he studies organ with David Graham, Charlie Andrews and Martin Schmeding. With the RCM organ department Barney has been on organ trips to Haarlem, Netherlands and across Leipzig and Hamburg, including playing in St. Bavo’s and the Thomaskirche. Barney combines his studies with his role as the Gordon Reynolds Organ Scholar at HM Chapel Royal, Hampton Court Palace, and has previously held posts at St. Mary’s, Barnes and St. Mary Magdalene, Richmond. Highlights from these include choir tours to Southwark Cathedral and Queen’s College, Cambridge.

Last year Barney was privileged to perform Saint-Saens Organ Symphony with the RCM Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Chloe van Soeterstede, and has given organ recitals at St. Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral, Edinburgh, Brentwood Cathedral, Holy Trinity Sloane Square and Croydon Minster amongst many others. Later in the year Barney looks forward to giving a recital at Sinfonia Smith Square, and from September, joining St. Marylebone Parish Church as organ scholar.
