Essex Young Musician of the Year – 2024

Seen above, amongst a dazzling group of young Essex musicians, we are very pleased to find Owen Romhany, a multi-talented performer, who has been associated with the Cathedral Music Department for several years, and is currently a member of the Cathedral choir.

Owen, recently played at  a  lunchtime recital in the Cathedral, with Sophia Assitzoglou (violin) and Stephen King (organ), where he demonstrated his skill with both the trombone and the cello … see details.

recitalsOwen began as a junior chorister at the Cathedral and now sings in the adult choir at the 11:30 Sunday Mass.

Over the recent weekend he was a finalist in the Essex Young Musican of the Year, coming third behind two adult postgraduate students at London Conservatoires.recitals

He was recently awarded the Academic Award at the Junior Guildhall School of Music and Drama; and he was also offered a place to study trombone next year at the Royal Academy of Music, the Royal College of Music, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and was also awarded a scholarship at the Royal Northern College of Music.

Owen has also been offered a place at Durham University to read Theology, and has been awarded the Durham University Vice Chancellor’s Scholarship for music.

As a pupil at Brentwood School, he was also fortunate to hold a scholarship and a bursary, and to have achieved Grade 8 in Trombone, Cello and Voice.

We wish Owen every success as he goes to University, and we hope that we will see him performing again at the Cathedral in the future.
