Biography

Lucy Summers started violin lessons at age seven with Brenda Farrow finally going on to the Royal College of Music where she studied with Dona Lee Croft, a pupil of Milstein, and participating in masterclasses with Dorothy Delay, Igor Oistrakh and the Chilingirian String Quartet.

Lucy attained a GRSM degree, teaching diploma and ARCM at post graduate level.

On leaving the RCM, Lucy played in Lisbon for the National Orchestra of Portugal for a year, returning to the UK where she took up the position of sub-principal 2nd violin with the Northern Ballet Sinfonia touring in England and abroad, finally moving back home to Leigh-on-Sea in 2003.

Here she began a busy freelance career playing with many London orchestras including the BBC Concert and Philharmonia in addition to building up a thriving teaching practice and tutoring at a local private school while finding time to found and conduct an adult string orchestra, Simply Strings.

Becky Cox began learning to play the ‘cello at the age of ten with local teacher, Frank Henry, then went on to study with renowned teacher, Lily Phillips, from the Royal Academy of Music.  She won a scholarship to Trinity College of Music in London where she obtained their honours degree and teaching diploma.  She teaches the ‘cello and has recently played with the Chineke! Orchestra.  She now plays regularly with the St Paul’s Sinfonia.

Jane Compton studied locally with Winifred French and then at the London College of Music obtaining their honours degree and teaching diploma as well as the Royal Academy of Music’s diploma in accompanying.  She went on to become a busy accompanist, playing for many singers and instrumentalists in concerts, exams and festivals as well as a rehearsal pianist for many of Southend’s amateur dramatic societies.  She now teaches privately and at Westcliff High School for Girls.

Lucy, Becky and Jane have been playing together since September 2022.  They love to play chamber music and feel at their very best as musicians when they perform as the Summers Piano Trio.

They have performed at the Southend Chamber Music Club and in two of Southend’s Holocaust Memorial Services.  On Wednesday 17 July this year, they are performing in the Southend Borough Council’s lunchtime concert series at the Civic Centre, and on Saturday 20 July at Belle Vue Baptist Church in a charity concert supporting Havens Hospice Care.

Refreshments will be  available in the Song School afterwards
